Today we’re featuring the next episode on ulive! It’s called Petanque (pronounced ‘Pay-Tonk’). Petanque is like French bocce, it’s a very popular sport all over France, with informal gatherings springing up all over when the weather is nice. It’s a beautiful sport–metallic, engraved heavy balls, soft and subtle landings and clangs, and perfect for an easygoing afternoon game. We had been eyeing this little field near where we lived when we imagined this episode, and love that we have this piece to remember forever. We were actually introduced to Petanque from a family member who brought the game back from France around 10 years ago, and we fell in love with the game before seeing it in its natural habitat…
We had a lot of different ideas for this episode–we thought it could just be an instructional video; we thought it could be the kids talking about playing pétanque interspersed with playing; we thought it could just feature Ralph, and Oscar; we thought it could mostly be Ralph and Oscar playing, then they watch some players in an informal gathering. But how this episode ended up feels magical to us. From the perfect title by Clayton Thompson, to the brilliantly simple artistic vision of Tiger in a Jar! We love how it captures an older generation welcoming a younger into their game and culture, and the boys getting lost in the game. We hope you love it, too! Watch Petanque now!
